Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
