A person who contaminated candy with sedative and distributed them to children at a summer camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two young males who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from that region, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

However, he denied a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She said his victims were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he operated.

The man played a "treat game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She told the court the man had engaged in this activity with the young males "repeatedly", and children had previously become sick the following morning.

She explained the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained items including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were located, and his stepchild notified the authorities about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.

Mrs Prior said the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then conducted the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
