Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Squad Versus Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.

Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international team following being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Team Changes

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.

Pace Additions and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
